John Batchelor and I welcomed Casey Dreier of The Planetary Society as our guest for a double segment Hotel Mars program to discuss the recent NASA announcement that water plumes were on Europa.  We talked about why this was important for the possible discovery of organics and possible life by being able to sample the plumes rather than drilling through the ice to be able to get samples from Europa's ocean.  Casey explained the two different methods used to discover the plumes, the role of the Hubble Space Telescope and what the JWST can offer when it comes on line.  We also discussed the planned Europa Clipper mission, the instruments that will be on board, plus the need to predict where the plumes will be so the Clipper mission can fly through.  Casey talked about the need for a Europa lander and why.  John raised questions about SLS and the use of other big rockets being planned.  Note what Casey had to say about SLS and big rockets.
